Expanding on one of the SEO blogs we wrote last week, we quickly wanted to make sure you fully understand the superpowers backlinks have.

Last week we covered the fact that links make the web.  Since we were covering all types of links in that article, the importance of backlinks may not have been grasped by those new to website ownership or online marketing.

I’ll cover this more in-depth at the end of this post, but backlinks are more valuable for websites that need to rank nationwide or worldwide when compared to the value they offer a local business.  With that said, a local business with quality backlinks can dominate the search results.

Look at backlinks like votes

This is how I explain backlinks each and every time I discuss this one on one with one of our website and SEO clients.

To simplify why backlinks are so important, simply look at them like votes.

Remember, a backlink is simply a clickable text, or possibly an image, that leads a website viewer from website A to website B.  Essentially, website A is voting for the quality or relevance of the content on website B.  Website A obviously felt some kind of value would be passed along to their website view by sending them to a different website.  Specifically, a specific page on another website.

Never buy backlinks

What I do not want you to do is start searching ‘how to get backlinks’ on Google right now.  Mixed in with quality results will be websites offering to sell you backlinks.  Never buy backlinks.

That’s all for this section…just wanted to make it perfectly clear to not buy backlinks!

How to get backlinks

Start by building a quality website another website would potentially want to link to.  This really just means make sure the content on your website is your content.  It needs to be accurate, up-to-date, informative, and interesting.  Content can be created in many forms these days including written copy, images, videos, infographics, charts, and more.

If you have content on your website another website’s visitors would benefit from, there is a chance that website will link to you automatically, without even telling you.

Ask for backlinks!

There is a chance websites will link to your quality content without even telling you.  More often than not, you are going to have at least ask!  What’s the worst they can say, no?

If you send an email asking for the backlink, they will probably not respond at all instead of saying no.

Get creative!  Call them and ask for the backlink, try texting them.  What about this off the wall idea, send them some snail mail requesting the backlink.  The point is, don’t get lazy and do what everyone else is doing.  You’ll need to get creative to actually get backlinks.

Are all backlinks equal?

No.  No.  No.

No, they are not!

A very high-quality relevant backlink could possibly be the single best thing you could do for your SEO.

On the flip side, spammy or suspicious backlinks could potentially be the most harmful thing that could happen to damage your SEO.

Backlinks will only help you if they are coming from a quality website that’s topic is relevant to your website.  Also, covered in our last blog post covering links, the backlink needs to be a ‘follow’ link to pass along the SEO benefit.  If it is a ‘nofollow’ the value is greatly diminished.

Do backlinks matter for local SEO?

Yes and no.

The fact of the matter is so few local businesses have any quality backlinks, it’s not a major thing to worry about as far as SEO goes for most local businesses.  Yet, if you were to earn some quality backlinks, this would potentially make you stand out as the obvious best choice to the search engine algorithms.

SEO’s puzzle pieces
